Between May 1 and yesterday, VCDs worth RM45 million were seized and the police believe they could achieve their goal of wiping out or at least minimising the distribution of pirated and pornographic VCDs before the deadline.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Norian Mai told a Press conference that he had instructed the police Commercial Crimes Division last weekend to intensify the nationwide crackdown.
He said the crackdown would cover raids on entertainment and illegal gaming machine outlets, drug abuse, illegal immigrants and vice activities.
In yesterday's operation, police raided 54 VCD shops and pedlars nationwide and detained 16 people for their involvement in distributing and selling the illegal copies.
Since May 1, the total number of arrests reached 1,062 nationwide.
In yesterday's operation, police detained 1,126 dadah addicts and traffickers and seized 322.03 grammes of heroin, cannabis (17,428.9g), psychotropic pills (96) and cough mixture (21 litres).
Police raided 23 vice dens and detained 27 people.
They also raided 40 entertainment outlets and 40 outlets that promoted illegal electronic gaming machines. (See accompanying graphics).
Meanwhile, enforcement officers from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry yesterday seized 6,535 pirated VCDs worth more than RM32,000 nationwide.
Between June 1 and yesterday, ministry officers seized a total of 24,3706 VCDs estimated to be worth more than RM1.6 million.
